Response to August's Article on LGBT Youth

I most definitely agree with this article. LGBT people are people too and to constantly look down on them as being "not appropriate" for kids is just not right. August quotes Marley's college student as saying that homosexuality is "a perversion and not a natural way of loving someone" and saying that it is wrong for a young child to naturally accept it as a natural way to live, and this makes me feel very emotional.  It's hard for me to identify where I fit on the LGBT spectrum as I seem like your average straight white women but ever since my early teens I've felt a strong connection to the LGBT community and feel like somehow that it is a community that I belong to. That being said, I completely disagree with how this student feels. Sure, LGBT tendencies may not be "natural" in the sense that they are the majority, but about 8 to 10 percent of Americans are LGBT, which is too large of a chunk to be ignored and dismissed like that.

  1. Very well said! I love the point you brought up about LGBTQ making up the majority of the population, and yet they're still ignored. The pictures you used are very helpful as well!

  2. I like how you used the statistics in your blog! It really gives us an idea on how much still needs to be done to move foward. Its sad to see someone refer to homosexuality as "a perversion and not a natural way of loving someone" is sad. I just hope we can get to a place where we can all just accept one another for who we are.

  3. hi Justine, I love your response. I like the pictures you added.. clearly change isn't going to happen over night and its going to take one step at a time but its crazy to think that its still so hard to accept one another.

  4. I like your response and your graphics, Justine. Also, your affinity for the LGBT community is definitely something to act on, even just as an ally. Support means so much to the community, especially to young people who may not have it at home.
